It was a summer wedding on the 29th of July 1981. The whole country had been given the day off to watch it and celebrate. Crowds lined the streets in a throng. The country had just emerged from a tumultuous decade of social and economic strife and the new hard line Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was in power and looking to bring harmony to the discord. This wedding was the perfect start.

The global audience for the wedding has been estimated at seven hundred and fifty million people. Street parties were held in Britain and the Commonwealth. Anyone from any noble family was there along with ambassadors and diginatiaries and a few media celebrities, although not as many as there have been since. It was held in Westminster Abbey by the ArchBishop of Canterbury so you could not get anyone higher than that. The reception was held, of course, at Buckingham Palace and the couple did not disappoint with a nice kiss on the balcony. And yes, Camilla Parker Bowles was a guest.
