How to Stay Cool When Playing Football in the Heat

Football is a fast paced game that requires a lot of energy, so it’s not surprising that staying cool when playing is a priority. Heat exhaustion and dehydration are no joke, and it’s essential that players avoid these issues wherever possible.

In the past, FIFA has even asked that the World Cup not be held in extremely hot conditions, putting the spotlight on just how important the weather can be for those partaking in the game. There are, however, some easy ways to stay cool when playing, and it’s not too difficult to avoid intense sun and heat.

Stay Hydrated

By staying hydrated you can stay cool on the football field, as your body temperature will be regulated and not draw on energy reserves. Being hydrated may not change the external temperature, but it can keep your body temperature lower and let you play at your best. By drinking water throughout the day you can ensure you are not dehydrated, and even if you don’t feel thirsty you should be drinking water regularly, as being thirsty is the first sign of dehydration!

Timing is Everything

The temperature early in the morning and later in the afternoon is always cooler, so these are the best times to pay football. Early morning training or early evening games can ensure that players don’t have to face the heat of the day, and its always a good idea to avoid playing between 11am and 2pm, as these are the hottest hours of the day.

Dress Appropriately

Team Football Kits such as those available at should be appropriate for the weather conditions games will be played in. Long pants and long jerseys are not a good idea if players will be in the heat of the sun, and this should always be a consideration when choosing gear. Although shorts, jersey and long socks are the norm, you may want to adapt the uniform depending on how hot it gets.

Stick to Shady Spots

If possible, play football in the shade. While this may not be possible for matches, practice may take place in shadier spots to ensure that players don’t overheat. Sunburn should also be considered, and necessary precautions taken against this. The cooler the field or practice area, the better players will perform.
