What a Fire Risk Assessment Checks in Practice

If someone is coming to your premises to carry out a fire risk assessment then it would be helpful to know what they are looking for.

Ignition Sources and Fuel Loads

Electrical distribution boards, portable heaters etc. are looked at to identify potential fire sources and corresponding fuel. Also, any stock of hazardous substances are checked to see if they are stored safely.

Means of Escape and Exit Signage

Check all the means of escape from each room through to the final point of exit outside. Check that all means of escape are clear and that there is sufficient emergency lighting to safely make your way out of the premises. Check that all exit signs are present, are clearly legible and are positioned at the correct point along each exit route (at the start of each turn etc.).

Fire Detection and Alarm Coverage

Check fire detection and alarm coverage. Detectors should be installed in the correct locations. The sounder should be audible throughout the premises. Check the system has been tested and serviced recently. Note call-point records and any faults on the fire panel.

Suppression Equipment

Extinguishers: Correct type for area, correct height on wall, clear access and current service tag. For premises fitted with sprinkler systems: Nothing blocking the spray from sprinkler heads. Up to date service records for sprinkler systems.

Compartmentation and Fire Doors

Each fire door is checked including making sure that self-closers are closing the door fully, that seals are still intact and that no attempt has been made to block the door open. Also, checks are made to the ceiling voids and to all service penetrations for any gaps in fire-stopping that could allow smoke to escape between compartments.

Management Records

He or she will review your previous fire risk assessment, your fire safety management records such as maintenance records for items like fire alarms and extinguishers, your staff fire safety training records, and highlight any actions or recommendations that still need to be addressed. The responsible person must be able to prove that he or she is keeping all of the above up to date in order to comply with the fire safety law for non-domestic premises.
