What you need

The products and tools used for cleaning the toilet should be separate from those used elsewhere in the house. For effective loo-cleaning you need the following:

Rubber gloves
Toilet brush
Abrasive sponge
Bleach
A good bathroom cleaner

How to clean

For active ingredients in bleach and cleaners to work, they must be left to sit for a while. Start by putting bleach in the bowl and then use a brush to ensure the bleach covers all portions of the bowl, including the rim. Now leave this for ten minutes.

Then, spray the bathroom cleaner on all other areas of the toilet, not forgetting the entire outside of the bowl, the tank, both sides of the seat and the area behind the seat. Leave the cleaner on the surface for ten minutes.

Use a damp sponge to wipe it all away. Finish off with an anti-bacterial wipe, first by giving the flush mechanism a second clean. Then use wipes over the rest of the toilet to remove any last traces of dirt or cleaner. Dispose of the wipes in a bin.

Finally, flush the loo.

What else you can do to keep the toilet flushing

It’s not just the bit of the toilet that you can see that needs to stay in good condition, but the whole thing, all the way off your property. The best way to do that is to upgrade the pipes with protective sewer pipe lining.
