Maintaining masonry work

Masonry such as brick, stone, concrete or tile and mortar is used on many decorative features or sills as well as walls. With proper maintenance, masonry will be very long-lasting and still look great. But it’s important to make sure the masonry is well-maintained and not damaged. There are several ways to keep on top of masonry maintenance.

Check it out

Make sure you carry out regular checks on masonry to make sure there is no wear and tear; that water is draining away as it should, and there isn’t any weather damage. If you spot damp, you could install a damp proof course just above ground level or make sure downspouts direct water away from the base of the wall by at least two metres. Once a year or every six months, you can walk around the walls to check the condition of your masonry. Then make a list of any work that needs to be done such as repointing, repairing mortar joints or filling in hairline cracks – https://www.buildings.com/article-details/articleid/15221/title/masonry-maintenance-extending-envelope-value/viewall/true.

Stop moisture problems

Do not use solutions which are waterproof or water repellent or sealants as a way to stop moisture problems. Make sure that there is proper flashing in place and repair any cracks found in masonry and joints.

Right ways to clean

Cleaning only needs to be done when it is necessary to stop any wear and tear or if the masonry is heavily soiled. Use the least abrasive method possible to prevent further damage. A low-pressure water wash with detergents and using natural bristle brushes are effective and gentle ways to clean masonry. With any detergents or cleaners, test it out on a small part of the building which will not be noticed to make sure it will not discolour or damage the masonry. For peace of mind, you may want to consider hiring masonry cleaning companies, such as Stonehealth who have the experience to find the right solution for you.

Less is more

It is generally advised to leave unpainted masonry unpainted. However, if you do have painted masonry which needs removing, then just hand scrape back the deteriorated painted areas. If the paint is well stuck and does not flake off, then it is best to leave it because you could damage the masonry. Clean thoroughly before repainting with masonry paint.
