Learning to Drive in the UK

For teenagers in the UK, turning 17 is a big milestone as this is the age that you can start to learn to drive and get some independence. Although 17 is the minimum age that you are allowed to drive a car on public roads in the UK, you can apply for a provisional licence up to three months before your 17th birthday if you are really keen to get going, find a driving instructor and start having lessons.

There are two parts to the UK driving test – the practical test and the theory. Being able to drive competently means knowing about the highway code and what certain signs and markings mean – for example, what chevron kits are used for and what certain road signs mean.

The practical test is where you will be taken out by an examiner who will ask you to drive a certain route, complete some driving manoeuvres and answer some questions on the Highway Code. However, you will only be able to take your practical test once you have passed your theory test.

Before you begin to learn you will need to find a driving instructor. Find driving instructors that are local to you – you can look online or ask friends and family members if they can recommend a driving instructor to you. You may have to wait for an instructor, so it is worth thinking about doing this in advance if you are keen to start learning as soon as possible.

Your driving instructor will show you the basics of the car and start slowly to help you gain confidence. They will also be able to advise you when they think you are ready to take your theory test. Your theory test will be done at a specialist test centre, and as well as the questions there is also a hazard perception part of the test. To practise this there are examples of it online that you can use.

Once you have passed your theory test, your instructor will be able to start preparing you for your practical test, as well as what you should expect on the day and what you need to bring with you. Don’t be put off if you don’t pass your practical test the first time. Although it can be disappointing, many people fail their test a few times before passing, and you can chalk it up to a good experience.
