Ancient Ireland. A country blessed with many sites
Ireland’s countryside is very much preserved and untouched. This has meant that the land is able to show it’s ancient secrets much more readily than other developed countries. Ireland’s prehistoric structures predate the Pyramids and are just as significant. We have learnt a lot about the origins of not only Irish culture but also the lives and experiences of Stone age people as well. In these sites you can see the basis of language, belief, ritual and life concerns all left by the remains of these once great sites. - Newgrange. This is the must see site for Ireland’s ancient past. It is a chambered covered tomb that has a passageway leading to it’s centre. Sunlight streams through in the dawn and evening illuminating the passageway as if it was a gateway to the next world.
- Poulnabrone Portal tomb. Another example of an ancient tomb and dolmen. This was found to contain several bones seeming to be a family. There were some fantastic grave goods including a beautifully polished Ax indicating that this was an established set of people within the tribe.
- The Stone circle at Ardgroom. Stone circles feature prominently in Stone age life and Ireland is no exception to this with this fine example. Nine of the original stones eleven remain giving the place an air of great grandeur.
