Power of attorney cost cut for thousands of people

More and more people are understanding the importance of having powers of attorney in place in case they temporarily or permanently are incapable of handling their own affairs. They need to understand the costs of registering these documents and how these can be reduced.

If you are one of those people and are thinking of creating a power of attorney Hertfordshire you can find help by searching online for specialists such as beesandco.com/our-services/power-of-attorney/hertfordshire.

What is the cost of registering a power of attorney?

Powers of Attorney have to be registered with the Court of Protection. You need to pay for each one registered and so if you have both a finance and property LPA and a health and care LPA you will have to pay separately to register both. The current fee is £92 for each and you can pay by credit card, debit card or cheque.

How to get a reduction or exemption

If you check with the OPG you will find that you can apply for a reduction in the cost if you currently earn less than £12,000 or for an exemption if you receive certain benefits. A reduction in the fee is known as a remission and this means the person registering the power of attorney will pay £46 which is a 50% reduction.

To be awarded an exemption, you need to be in receipt of certain means-tested benefits. These include the Guarantee Credit element of pension credit, council tax benefit and housing benefit. You will need to provide evidence to the OPG.
