Using the internet, you could for the term ‘skip hire’ and your geographical area. This should bring you up plenty of results and often there will be customer reviews to help give you an idea of the service levels. Your local council website might also have approved waste contractors listed. This way you can be confident that they are properly licensed to dispose of waste. You could just as easily see one on the drive of one of your neighbours and all will have the name of the company and telephone number printed on the side.

For peace of mind, you can contact the Environment Agency to check whether the skip operator has the proper license or ask for the skip company’s license number and enter it onto the Environment Agency website. You could also ask about public liability insurance which covers you if there is any damage to your property when collecting or delivering the skip.

You can put anything into a skip apart from the following:

You could be charged more if you’ve ordered a skip too small for your needs or you’ll be asked to remove the excess waste before the company will load the skip and take it away. Where can I put a skip?
If you intend to put a skip on a public highway then you will need to apply for a skip hire permit. If the skip will also be covering an area of controlled parking or pay and display then you’ll also need to obtain a parking suspension. Leave yourself a few days to get these sorted before hiring a skip. On a driveway or private property will incur no additional charge.
How much is a skip?
The cost will vary depending on size, location and the kind of waste you want to dispose of. On average, £300 will hire you an 8-yard skip but if you need the parking suspension and skip hire permit then it will cost more. The skip is usually hired for between 1 and 2 weeks but if you’re finished with it sooner, just call the company for collection. Remember that the longer you have the skip, the higher your permit and suspension fees will be if you are having it on the road.
